E-invoicing in Sweden

Sweden has strong public-sector e-invoicing adoption and widespread Peppol use, but it does not currently impose a broad B2B e-invoicing mandate. The Swedish market is therefore driven by public-sector compliance, procurement expectations and private-sector automation rather than a national B2B clearance regime.

For companies selling to Swedish public entities, structured e-invoicing capability is essential. For B2B transactions, Peppol and SFTI recommendations create a practical standardisation path even without a general mandate.

What the mandate means

Swedish public-sector customers must be able to receive and process electronic invoices that meet the European standard. Suppliers are strongly expected to support structured e-invoicing when selling to public bodies. Private-sector B2B e-invoicing remains voluntary, but large buyers may require it contractually.
Sweden’s practical standard is Peppol BIS Billing 3.0, supported by the country’s e-procurement and e-commerce recommendations.

What businesses should do now

Suppliers to Swedish public bodies should maintain Peppol connectivity and EN 16931 validation.

Businesses trading with Swedish enterprise customers should be prepared for contractual e-invoicing requirements even where the law does not impose a general B2B obligation.
